iPhone in the Car - February 7th, 2008
My buddy the Wookie recently treated himself to an iPhone. He called me up as an iPod Touch owner to convince him why he “needed” the iPhone. I just laughed. Trust me, this is not a man who needed convincing. We went out to dinner the other night and he showed me some of his recent photography via the iPhone’s photo album, exchanged both text messages and telephone calls with his boss, and looked a couple of things up online. He also showed me that he had no music on the iPhone and is still carrying around his three-year-old iPod. I didn’t say anything. He and I have differing philosophies about that kind of thing and have long ago agreed to disagree.
Now that the iPhone has gotten a jump in memory, up to 16gb, I suspect more owners like the Wookie will be willing to sacrifice space to a few tunes and to start thinking about things like integrating the iPhone into their driving experience. Back in December I posted about the Land Rover LRX concept featuring an iPhone dock, but I don’t think too many people are going to go buy a new car just to have a place to dock their iPhone. And thankfully that won’t be necessary as iLounge has thoughtfully put together “The Complete guide to iPhone Car Integration.” Most options are still in a stage I’d term “cludgey,” but with the iPhone selling like hot cakes, I don’t imagine slicker solutions are long in coming. In the short term, however, click on over to iLounge to check out what you can do now.
