New Direction, New GPS Units - January 17th, 2008

Real life demands that updates here will now be posted on Tuesday and Thursdays. I hope that’s going to allow me to collect interesting items and put together lengthier updates with more digest-type content so you’ll still be getting pointed in a lot of directions, but with fewer actual postings. I’m working on getting that accomplished more efficiently and hopefully the new routine will quickly assert itself and we’ll continue to click along in our quest for automotive-related geekiness.

For starters, I stumbled on to a nice piece over at Slate’s The Green Lantern, “The Premium Premium: Is High Octane Gas Bad for the Environment?” by Brendan I. Koerner that offers a succinct breakdown of just exactly what all that octane stuff means and under what circumstances you can help and hurt your engine by your choice of fuel grade.

And, a couple of notes on the ever-present GPS fascination . . .

NAV ONE 5000

Via Engadget we have word of the new Cobra NAV ONE 5000 with a five-inch touch screen that you can supposedly see in “extreme lighting conditions.” All the Cobra standard features are there — speed, red light camera alerts, Bluetooth, and so on. With a 15-month traffic service subscription you’re looking at $160 on top of the unit’s $510 price tag. Nothing about this one to set the world on fire, but it looks to be a good solid unit from a known entity.

Garmin’s GPS Line Up

Also from Engadget, whose crew was kept more than busy at the Consumer Electronics show in Las Vegas last week, you can check out information on the latest Garmin GPS units (which seemed to impress the Engadget writers.) The boxes are thin with clear, sharp touchscreens and feature MSN Direct. (Just for the record, I’m dubious on the usefulness of that one as well, but for some folks, it may be a selling point.)
