Underwater Car. Okay, Whatever.
Back on the 20th, Wired carried a story about a futuristic outfit in Switzerland called Rinspeed. They’re working on a concept for an amphibious car, the sQuba. There’s one we’ve heard before and seen before — at least from Hollywood — but these folks seem to have a working prototype of an ultralight vehicle with carbon nanotube body panels and twin electric engines. Underwater, well, you can guess this part. It has propellers.
The plan is to unveil the sQuba at the Geneva Auto Show in March. In the meantime, you can read about the car and see photos and videos at Rinspeed’s site, http://www.rinspeed.com/pages/cars/cars-e.htm”>here. Well, you’ll have to wait for the video. They say that will be released on February 15. And the photos? At the moment they’re just renderings showing a futuristic sports car with the top down. What, no self contained oxygen breathing system?
What is there really to say about something like this? Novelty. Toy. Rich. Famous. I suppose some worthy engineering and design advances could be touted. I could make some crack about how when the seas rise due to climate change we’ll all need one of these to get to our “seaside” homes. There’s the inevitable James Bond reference. But hey, I can’t swim so the sQuba won’t ever be for me.
