Odds and Ends from the RSS Reader - December 27th, 2007

Okay, time for some odds and ends that have just been sitting in my RSS reader demanding attention:

- On the 20th, AutoblogGreen had an interesting tidbit about a concept mobile phone Nokia has in the works. The thing (dubbed the Eco Sensor) has an air analyzer built into it that can detect such noxious stuff as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and even ground level ozone.

The idea is for folks with respiratory disease and asthma to be able to judge the level of emissions around them. This is not a bad notion in urban areas where an integral part of owning a car is sitting in traffic jams. Every night when the traffic report flashes on the news I mutter some imprecation to the effect that I’m damn grateful not to be out there.

While air analysis on the go won’t fix the problem, it would help people to take counter measures or to plan a different route if their regular one is simply too hard on their lungs.

- Engadget reported on the 13th that Tesla continues to have transmission woes, mainly finding one strong enough to deal with shifting gears at fuel torque. This is a problem inherent in electric cars and one that’s giving Tesla fits. For the full post, click here.

- And finally, Engadget also had word on the 13th about a new project at Mercedes-Benz designed to keep you awake at the wheel. “Attention Assist” will probably see production by 2009. The system judges the angle of the steering wheel, the speed of the car, and other internal and external factors to determine whether or not you’re alert and paying attention to the business of driving. If you’re not, warning lights and sounds ensue. For the full post, click here.
