Purdue Works on Educated Tires - December 21st, 2007

I’m often less than impressed with the product of various and sundry egghead  think tanks, but according to Engadget, researchers at Purdue are at work on wheel wraps for the next generation. This technology will allow the tires themselves to detect issues before they happen.

Essentially, the team from Electrohydraulic Center led by Gary Krutz, came up with a multi-layer design that looks for tire damage or defects and gives the driver the heads up courtesy of an embedded chip. Expect the technology to hit the road in race cars first, but in time we could all benefit from tires that are smart enough to tell us before they blow out.

You can click over to the News section of the Purdue University site and read more about what led Krutz to take on this project. It kinda made me snicker, frankly, because he sounds just like any other beleaguered father , “I became interested in this after I had to replace all the tires on my daughter’s and son-in-law’s car . . .”
