Follow the Yellow Brick Road, er Red Line Thingy - December 19th, 2007

Via Engadget I’ve just heard about a new GPS product called “Virtual Cable” made by Making Virtual Solid, a New Jersey outfit with a heck of an idea. Personally I’ve had little experience with GPS units beyond trying my hand at a little geo-caching. I’m one of those annoying souls who is convinced I always know where I am. This is made worse by the fact that I’m a Texan and as long as we’re between the Red and the Rio Grande we cannot, technically, be “lost.”
If, however, I was in any way prepared to admit to being navigationally challened, I’d be tempted by this system that uses a laser and a series of lenses to project a 3D guidance line out in front of the driver. (Follow the yellow brick road? Follow the yellow brick road.) The technology is said to interface with existing GPS systems and will run about $400 as a factory installed option.
To my way of thinking this could get past the having to listen and/or read and follow what your GPS unit is trying to tell you. It’s a more elegant, less distracting way to access techno-directions. Whether or not it’s actually easy to drive and follow this thing at the same time remains to be seen, but I find the overall concept intriguing.
