All-in-One Biodiesel Production Unit - December 5th, 2007

Like most geek-oriented folks I’ve watched the episode of “Dirty Jobs” where Mike Rowe runs around with the guy who collects cooking oil from restaurants and turns it into biodiesel in his garage. And while the idea of cheap, if not virtually free fuel, is appealing to me, the cobbled together equipment transcended the concept of “daunting.” Now a British company called Green Fuels has developed a machine to speak to would-be alternative fuel users drawn up short by the complexities of the process.
The FuelPod2 can produce a daily output of 50-liters of fuel from used cooking oil. The device, which stands about 4.5 feet tall, uses external band heaters controlled by thermostats to pre-heat the oil before any chemicals are added. Green Fuels promises a thorough user manual and a dedicated help line. It’s not cheap at $3,607 but it is the first self-contained biofuel production unit of which I’m aware.
