2008 Chevy Malibu Hybrid . . . Eh - October 26th, 2007

The General Manager of the Chevrolet Division of GM, Ed Peper, has announced Chevy’s about to start a media push in support of the 2008 Chevy Malibu Hybrid. It’s hard for me to envision an environmentally friendly Malibu when the name still conjures up visions of the early 1970s vintage mustard yellow Malibu coupe my parents drove. But these babies are definitely not my folks’ Malibu.

The Malibu hybrid, which will start in the neighborhood of $20,000, is a stylish sedan incorporating a lot of up-to-date technology. There’s just one problem. As hybrids go, this one isn’t going to set the world on fire. Autobloggreen is figuring the gas mileage numbers at 24 city, 34 highway. In this day and time all I gotta say is, “Big whoop.”

We’ve all been playing that “it’s a step in the right direction” game and that worked for most of 2006 and 2007, but now it’s time for automakers to start delivering real performance hybrid products. If they don’t, the competition will surely have a better offering on the lot. I’m sensing that the true war of the hybrids is about to begin and that, my friends, is what finally drives true, innovative development. The bottom line.
