Waiting for the Concepts in Tokyo - October 16th, 2007

Some people may be looking forward to the opening of the Tokyo Auto Show next week for the new models we’ll actually see hit the road. Me? I’m a sucker for the concept cars. The ones I really, really, really want to see hit the road — knowing they probably never will.

Toyota will be showing a one-seater called the i-REAL. It’s kind of wheelchair-esque, and has been designed to drive on sidewalks and on the road. I’m not all that sure how I’d feel about being in traffic on one of these things, but that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t like to get in one and give it a whirl.

Nissan has the PIVO electric with its funky revolving, egg-shaped cabin. They’ve stuck some kind of talking robot in there to help with the driver’s mood, which may rank as the all time worst idea I’ve ever heard, but I’m still interested to see the thing.

And then Honda has the Puyo, another bubble-ish creation intended to protection pedestrians in “light collisions.” Come to think of it, the Puyo does look a little bit like a marshmallow on wheels.

No telling what else the Japanese Big Three will have in store for us. The press gets in on the 24th (next Wednesday) so all kinds of new stuff should be hitting the web. Stay tuned.
