Carectomy? That Sounds Painful - September 26th, 2007

For some time I’ve been saying that to really reach a green relationship with our automobiles we need to redefine what those vehicles mean in society. I haven’t been quite ready to give up my ride and start hoofing it, however, but I have been trying to drive more intelligently — planning the shortest routes possible for the maximum number of tasks and doing everything I can not to drive on bad ozone days.

A new site I found today, isn’t exactly set to make us a nation of pedestrians — although it wouldn’t hurt our waist lines — but it is asking tough questions about the difficult issues inherent in expanding the personal transportation options we use daily. Carectomy.com tackles topics relevant to mass transportation and alternative modes of getting around — everything from bikes to our own two feet. While not all of the options are available to all of us, the site makes for a fascinating read, and it will make you think.

It may seem strange to be promoting a site called “carectomy” at an automotive blog, but let’s face it — thinking outside the box that is the cab of our gas guzzling SUV is a major part of re-evaluation and maybe re-inventing how we get around in the 21st century.
