Freewriting Friday: Family Cars - September 14th, 2007
On Fridays, we take a break from the tech talk and get a little more personal. Today, we’re talking about family cars.

I’m technically an only child, so for me, the family car was never a minivan or even a station wagon. Instead, the first car I remember riding in was a classic VW Bug. It was navy blue (not the light color in the image), and my mother and I, because we both appreciate alliteration, referred to it as Benjamin Beetle Bug.
We had that car for years - at least from the time I was five through my 10th birthday. My mother finally sold it when we were preparing to move from Colorado to California, but it seems the car has stayed with me in memory a lot longer.
Of course, everyone had Bugs back then. I remember walking through the parking lot of our condo complex in 1979, and being able to count on one hand the cars that weren’t either Volkswagen bugs (or buses, which were originally based on the bug) or old trucks.
Later cars would be bigger - a Subaru hatchback we called Arnold - or cooler - a turquoise MG-B - or just more reliable - a beige Toyota Corolla, one year, followed by a Camry the next - but the Bug drove itself into my young heart and parked, and remains there today.
Your turn: What were the family cars that your family had?

Hi there - I’m back again. I tried to copy and paste but it hasn’t worked. If you come back to my site and click on ‘Two new toys’ on the side bar -in the comment box, the second comment from Randall Sherman says ‘This video’ - that’s the link. Enjoy!
My mother had an orange Gremlin for years and years. At least 15. She bought it when I was very young, I think in 3rd grade and she drove it until it was literally falling apart. I always hated the car, but I still miss her driving it.
