FlyBo Hits Town . . . in Saginaw, Michigan - September 10th, 2007

In testament to my true overall geekiness, I would absolutely love to drive a SmartCar. The closest thing folks of a like mind here in the States are going to be able to buy, at least for awhile, is the FlyBo-EV. The compact, electric car will go on sale in Saginaw, Michigan in coming weeks, available only at the Great Lakes Auto Sales dealership.

The powertrain for the mini EV is a 48-V motor. The vehicle will run for 70 miles on a single charge and all the driver needs then is a common household outlet. Don’t expect to be drag racing in this little darling. You’ll top out at 25 mph, but as an “around the neighborhood” car, this little sucker can’t be beat.

The Chinese FlyBo starts at $10,000 and there’s only room for two in the rear-wheel drive vehicle. The interesting thing is that contenders in this genre are showing up more and more frequently these days giving testament to the growing interest in just this kind of “second” car. Whether it’s a “green” thing or the pain of $3 a gallon gas, we’re going to start seeing cars like the FlyBo on city streets and I confess, I would love to be driving one.
