The Green, Green Past of Auto Design - August 31st, 2007
On the long list of “Things for Which I Am a Sucker,” old photos and antique technology are high up there. AutoblogGreen posted a great feature today entitled “Top 10 Green Cars That Have Been Lost to Time (1924-1973.)
Beyond the fact that the blurbs on each vehicle are fascinating the photos are just great. And in each one you can see ideas that are still getting kicked around. Back in June we reported on the “Air Car” currently in development in India in collaboration with Tata Motors. The first photo on the AutoblogGreen post is of a vehicle powered by compressed air.
You’ll see experiments in lighter frame materials, early attempts at hydrogen fuels, three-wheelers, and stream-lined aerodynamics — all things designers and engineers are still exploring today. Heck, there’s even bio-fuel out of cow manure. Of course, the only disheartening thing in this otherwise fun, nostalgic romp down automotive memory lane is that we’re still trying to develop a green vehicle the masses are willing to adapt. Sigh.
