Hybrid Tech Carries Political Cachet - August 17th, 2007

Okay, I stay away from politics as a topic of discussion with a purple passion, but I do think it’s worth noting the new political cachet of hybrid tech. These days if you’re running for office or married to someone running for office, you don’t want to be caught driving the wrong thing.

Bill Clinton, for instance, no longer uses a standard Secret Service issue SUV but instead relies on a special “presidential” Mariner Hybrid. There are some special modifications, like more leg room in the back so a desk can swing into place and so there will be plenty of space for the fridge. Sen./Mrs. C. uses a Ford Escape Hybrid.

The Escape would appear to be a fav with the presidential candidates for 2008 with Bill Richardson, John Edwards, Chris Dodd, and Mitt Romney all opting for the same set of wheels. Are they truly environmentally conscious or do they just want to look that way? They’re politicians. Who the heck knows?

All things “green,” including hybrid tech and alternative fuels currently carry a great deal of political cachet. If that gets more folks changing their habits and pondering this country’s long-standing dangerous and destructive addiction to oil, fine and dandy. (Of course I’d like to see one of the candidates really explain how their hybrid works and break down its benefits in mileage versus emissions. Now THAT would be a debate question.)
