Get Your Hatchback a Backpack - July 11th, 2007
Most of us have carried a backpack at one time or another, but getting one for your car? What’s up with that? The AutoRucksack is designed to attach to small hatchbacks to provide a flexible storage compartment.
The biggest downside is that the unit blocks the view out the back window, but there are some pluses. Unlike various rooftop storage compartments, this one is easy to install, remove, and store. It doesn’t add a lot of weight to the vehicle, and the Rucksack offers considerably less drag in aerodynamic terms than hardshell units that sit on top of the car.
Although the website is in German, it would appear that the Rucksack can be or is outfitted with wheels so it can be dragged like a trolley. Calling on my college language classes and using a metric converter, the Rucksack offers around 4 cubic feet of usable space. Dimensions are 2.9 ft x 1.6 x 1.1 and the cost is approximately $370 (sans shipping from Germany.)
With smaller, more fuel efficient cars coming back into vogue, people may find themselves a little crimped for the space they’ve gotten used to in the family SUV. This is one creative approach to solving that kind of problem, most likely one of many to come.
