Honest, Officer . . . - June 25th, 2007

Eric Peters at AOL Autos is offering up advice on avoiding speeding tickets — and it amounts to more than the obvious: slow down. His take on the situation is to make sure you don’t get noticed. The key elements of this lay-low approach include:

  • Stay within 5 to 10 mph of the other vehicles around you.
  • Opt to drive in the middle of the “pack.” (Let some other sucker take the lead and hit the radar first.)
  • Go rabbit hunting. Follow a solitary car traveling at about the speed you’d like to run.
  • Stay in one lane, don’t tailgate, and don’t be aggressive.
  • Don’t drive in the fast lane.
  • Watch the sides of the road for cut-outs and other spots where police officers are likely to lie in wait.
  • If you’re out there on the road alone, drive the speed limit.
  • If they are legal in your state, investigate a radar detector.
  • Don’t drive a conspicuous vehicle and don’t look conspicuous yourself.

Remember, tickets aren’t just a temporary annoyance. They can be a long-term hit to your pocket book by running up your insurance payments.
