Mistakes Teenagers Make Behind the Wheel - June 20th, 2007

Two sites working together have come up with a list of the ten most common mistakes teenage drivers are likely to commit behind the wheel. Cars.com and DriversEd.com are the authors of the list and frankly the items aren’t all that surprising.

  • Being distracted behind the wheel.
  • Taking too many risks.
  • Speeding.
  • Overcrowding the car.
  • Driving under the influence.
  • Following too closely.
  • Driving unbuckled.
  • Not being hable to handle emergencies.
  • Driving drowsy.
  • Choosing the wrong car and not maintaining it.

As a teen driver I was guilty of all of the above except two. My father supplied the wheels and mandated the maintenance schedule, so that was never a problem. He also taught me how to handle emergencies.

Yes, like all high school students, I took driver’s ed but my Dad was the one who really taught me to drive — who forced me to put two wheels off the road on different terrains to see how it would feel, to watch not just ahead and in the mirrors but to the side, to steer into a skid — and a myriad of other admonitions that are now so second nature I can no longer enumerate them.

It’s all well and good to let the driving teacher get your child ready for the test, but does the test get them ready for the road? The short answer is, no. If you don’t feel comfortable putting your teen driver through the paces of practical, real life, less than elegant driving, considering hiring an outside teacher to do the job. It’ll make for money well-spent and lives well-saved.
