Miami Broils with Road Rage - May 16th, 2007

While we’ve all lost our temper behind the wheel, it seems to happen more in Miami than anywhere else in America. For the second year the city has earned the top spot on a survey of road rage and downright rudeness conducted by AutoVantage. The list of offending behaviors runs the gamut from brake slamming to red light running.

You can expect behavior almost as bad in New York, Los Angeles, venerable Boston, and D.C. but you’re less likely to be tailgated in Portland or sworn at in St. Louis. These conclusions are based on a telephone survey conducted in 25 major cities during which some 2,500 regular commuters were interviewed.

Not surprisingly, the biggest cause of road rage and rude behavior is simple impatience. Perfectly reasonable human beings turn into demons behind the wheel in their desire to get where they’re going as fast as possible — a condition complicated by congested roadways and rising gas prices.

As hard as it may be to do, drivers need ease off the gas pedal and take a deep breath. Not only is this kind of behavior dangerous, but in many cities it can get you arrested. And chances are very good you won’t wind up in a nice segregated celebrity cell block like Paris Hilton.
