Time for Some Spring Cleaning - April 16th, 2007

Spring is in the air and it’s a good time to think about giving your ride some serious attention after the harsh winter months. Experts agree that keeping a car’s surfaces (glass, trim, paint, and wheels) as clean as possible is an important aspect of extending the life of the vehicle. Recommendations on frequency vary from once a week to once a month.

Don’t:

  • Use dishwashing soap or household cleaner.
  • Wash your car in direct sun. Shade makes for even drying and fewer streaks.
  • Allow your cleaning materials to become contaiminated with scratchy particles. Rinse well.

Remember the environment. Don’t allow the contaminents you are removing from the car and the soap you are using to wind up in local water supplies. Choose a self-serve car washing facility with good drains (and potentially water recycling capability.)

Do

  • Have a steady supply of water.
  • Use a soft, clean, terry towel or soft brush.
  • Start at the top and work to the bottom.

In general the procedure to be followed is:

  1. Rinse the entire car thoroughly with the goal of removing loose dirt and debrise.
  2. Wash and rinse the car in sections.
  3. Use a gentle motion when rubbing the surface of the car.
  4. Rinse your towel or sponge regularly to prevent the accumulation of dirt.
  5. Always rinse thoroughly with a good stream of water.
  6. Wipe the car down after the final rinse with a soft cloth or chamois.

Additionally you’ll want to wax your car regularly as a protectant for the paint. Don’t neglect undercoating and rust-proofing, especially if you are in an area where salt is used in the winter months as a road treatment.
