Ford Trucks Lose Ground - March 31st, 2007
They may be “built Ford tough,” but the F-series and Dodge Rams are getting just a bit long of tooth as the competition in the pick-up wars heats up, a fact that is likely to be reflected in monthly sales figures to be released on Tuesday.
The two trucks most likely to dislodge the long-standing market dominance of the F-series are the Chevrolet Silverado and the Toyota Tundra although competitors across the boards are doing well. In February F-series sales dropped 12 percent with Ram down 4.2 percent while GM pickups sales were up 29 percent.
Right now it’s all about the war of the sweet deals and extras. Toyota is offering $1,000 dealer cash on the double cab Tundra and $2,000 on the regular plus $1,000 trade-in assistance. Ford is offering an incentive of $3,000 or zero percent financing.
Lehamn Brothers analyst Brian Johnson wrote in a note to investors, “The fact that the all-new GMT900 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra full-size pickups were included in GM’s generous March incentive program may not be a good sign for the future pricing of the category.”
Overall the pundits are predicting auto sales for March to be down with Toyota and Honda gaining even more ground and the Detroit Three lagging farther behind. With incentives the name of the game, now might be a good time to start looking for a pick-up at a sweet price.
