Google Maps on Your Dashboard? - March 9th, 2007

As the line between the Internet as a “place” you can only visit via a computer and the Internet as a ubiquitous part of our daily activities grows more fuzzy, BMW has blurred the distinction even more by bringing Google Maps into the equation as a driver navigation aid — and not as a crumpled up print-out on the passenger seat.

At least some drivers in Germany who own driver-assist equipped BMWs can apparently already send Google Maps Deutschland listings to their cars as either contact information or as a navigational destination. The story, which appeared on the popular gadget website Engadget on March 8, listed Navigadget as a source. From there the information links back to a “personal blog of Google Italy Communication Manager, Stefan Hesse.” While that may have a “friend of a friend of a friend” quality about it, Navigadget has screen shots of a video from Hesse’s blog including one where the message clearly reads “message sent to car.”

If you’ve never played with Google Maps, it’s an impressive service and a natural partner to modern navigation-equipped vehicles. We’ll certainly be keeping our ear to the ground on this one, since this is a capability many American drivers would love to get their hands on.
