MEX-BX2500: Bluetooth for the Rest of Us - March 2nd, 2007
This week Sony unveiled its MEX-BT2500 in-car stereo with Bluetooth. This is actully the second head unit with Bluetooth that Sony has rolled out and this one is theoretically a cut under the MEX-BT5000. Both are members of the company’s Xplod car stereo line.
The original and more expensive BT5000 offers attractive options for streaming wireless audio, receiving a range of digital audio playback, making calls via Bluetooth via the integrated phone controls, and even the ability to copy cell phone address books. Reviewers weren’t thrilled with the interface, which does have a cumbersome placement of key controls like “start” and “end,” but overall the unit was received favorably. (Average price is around $350.)
The new BT2500 is being billed as an “entry level” model and while it lacks some of the bells and whistles of the BT5000, the core capabilities are impressive:
- CD/MP3/WMA player
- Bluetooth receiver for hands-free calls
- Bluetooth audio streaming
- built-in microphone
- flexibility to pair with as many as five phones simultaneously
The unit also has an auxiliary-input jack, a feature missing from its bigger brother and an attractive addition for non-Bluetooth devices like the iPod. The BX2500 is a 52 watt, four channel unit and will be available later this month for approximately $180.
