LEDs: Headlights of the Future - March 1st, 2007

The new Audi R8 — the company’s first ever mid-engine sports car — delivers 420 hp and considerable visual appeal with its race inspired design. One of its most interesting innovations from a tech angle, however, can be found in the headlights. The model uses LUXEON automotive LEDs from Philips Lumileds for its forward lighting.

Not only do LEDs meet the regulatory requirements for illumination and color, but they will also last the life of the vehicle and will withstand harsh temperature ranges. This new technology further raises the potential for uniquely designed headlights to enhance the increasingly sleek and aerodynamic appearance of modern cars.

Philips Lumileds Lighting Company is the leading producer of power LEDs in the world and has pioneered the use of energy efficient and durable LEDS for both portable and general lighting. With this innovative branching out into the world of automotive lighting, the company is undoubtedly leading the way for greater use of LED illumination in cars of the future.
